Tufts University graduate Marc came up with the concept behind Tech Limelight. He spent a great deal of time constructing websites during his senior year at the university. During this time, he came up with an idea focused on collecting content and media focused on specific topics. He found it tiring to visit multiple websites to get images, news and reviews on products and related topics in the technology industry. He decided the best way to fix the issue was to create a centralized resource that could house it all. Tech Limelight was his answer to this common problem.
Tech Limelight is not the first website to compile information and media on technology. However the site stands out in the way it focuses on the user community as well. Users can rate everything on Tech Limelight to help produce a better selection of articles, products and other relevant information.
The neon green and black Tech Limelight header offers a stylish contrast. However, a new user on the site may feel a little intimidated by the great deal of information available here. Users can see lists of top products, items that are popular in all categories, as well as popular in specific categories such as computers, electronics and phones. It doesn’t take long to learn the layout of the site, but the user has to be a true technology lover to want to do it.
To become a registered user, visitors can click on the blue “Register” link at the top, right hand corner of the homepage. A pop up box appears over the homepage and presents the user with their login options. New members can log in through an existing Yahoo, MySpace, Facebook, Google, OpenID, Twitter, LinkedIn, Windows Live ID, My Open ID, and AOL account. Users should also note that they may need to scroll to the right using the arrow buttons found at the bottom of the box to find all login options. There is no traditional registration form, but with so many login options it really isn’t necessary.
Tech Limelight thrives by having more users active on the site. Requiring a membership fee or subscription payment from users might deter them from participating. Luckily, the site is available to everyone for free. Technology lovers can get their fix daily by browsing popular categories and products featured on Tech Limelight.
